Why not? It seems that everyone is talking about sex. All the time. Use Google to search for anything, sex shows up. Read any online mag, yes, it’s there. It’s in every piece of click bait you’ve ever opened too. And it’s in the headline that just caught your eye. Now with the Ontario Government curriculum for sex education in the schools, kids will be taught about sex and all that goes with it as young as grade one.
Money.
One of the most powerful forces in the world and yet, no one talks about it. Did you know that it’s one of the top two reasons couples split up? Canadians have the highest consumer debt in history. It’s easy to get into debt. There are multiple credit cards, lines of credit, money lenders, mortgage companies, hundreds of ways to borrow money. Debt can creep in and destroy a family.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
First, who teaches the public about the cost of borrowing money, and more importantly about the cost of not paying it back quickly?
Second, spend less than you are earning. That’s sexy advice. But only if you hear it before you start down the road to debt. I worked with a client who was having trouble paying his credit card down. This is because they kept adding admin fees which increased his balance to above his credit limit. The admin fees were charged because he was going over his credit limit. Crazy, right? Sexy? No.
There is hope.
Just last week the Ontario outlined plans to roll out a pilot project for 28 schools for students in Grade 10. According the Education Minister Mitzie Hunter, “we want to make financial literacy relatable to students, and to their experience.”
Great I say, but start earlier. In the end, there’s a lot of work to be done to ensure that all Canadian teens leave school with the basic financial knowledge they need to be successful in life.
I see young adults all the time that are in a quandary about money. Many of them have never been inside a bank, and don’t know the difference between a chequing account and a savings account. All they know is plastic-magic money. Let’s not even start to think about Tax Free Savings Accounts or retirement plans.
